To compose means to create something by putting parts together, especially music, writing, or formal messages. It can also mean to form or make up a whole, as in when several parts compose something.

ラテン語 componere に由来し、com-「共に」+ ponere「置く」で、「ばらばらのものを一緒に置く」が原義。そこから文章を組み立てる、曲を作る、心を整えるへと意味が広がった。同根に component と position があり、「置く」感覚が共通している。
Compose comes from Latin componere, built from com- "together" and ponere "to place." Its basic sense was "to put together," and from that it developed into ideas like arranging words, music, or thoughts into an ordered whole.
