「avid」はフランス語 avide を経て、ラテン語 avidus「むさぼるほど欲する」から来て、語根は avere「強く望む」。avidity や avarice と同系で、今の「熱心な」には元来、少し貪欲なくらい求める勢いが残っている。
Avid came through French avide from Latin avidus, meaning "eager" or "greedy," from a root meaning "to desire strongly."
