解説 Definition
fan は、スポーツチームや歌手、作品などを好きで応援する人という意味です。日本語の「ファン」とほぼ同じですが、英語では扇風機を指す別の意味もあります。

fanatic（熱狂者）の短縮形で、ラテン語 fanaticus（神殿に取り憑かれた）→ fanum（神殿）が語源。19世紀に米国の野球用語として定着。fanatic（狂信者）、profane（神殿の外→世俗的）と同根。神に憑かれた熱狂が由来。
Fan in the sense of an enthusiastic supporter is a shortened form of fanatic. Fanatic ultimately comes through Latin fanaticus, meaning inspired or frenzied in connection with a temple, from fanum, “temple.” The shorter form became established in nineteenth-century American English, particularly in baseball. This history is separate from fan meaning a device that moves air, which has a different origin.
