fanatic はラテン語 fanaticus「神に取りつかれた、熱狂した」から来ており、その元の fanum は「神殿」を意味します。つまり本来は「神殿由来の熱狂」で、そこから宗教に限らず理性を失うほどの「狂信的な」となり、fane や profane が関連語です。
