ラテン語 inspirare（in-「中へ」+ spirare「息を吹き込む」）から。神が人の中に息＝霊感を吹き込むという古代の観念が由来。spirare系にはexpire（息絶える）、spirit（精神）がある。「息を吹き込まれた」状態が創造的な着想を意味する。
Inspired comes from Latin inspirare, meaning "to breathe into," from in- and spirare "to breathe." The same root appears in spirit and expire. In ancient thought, to be inspired was to have breath or spirit put into you, and that image later became the modern sense of receiving creative or uplifting influence.
