discussion の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 discussio（調査・検討）から、dis-（離して）+ quatere（打つ・振る）。原義は「打ち砕いてバラバラにする」で、問題を分解して検討する→議論するへ発展。同根語にconcussion（脳震盪＝共に打つ）、percussion（打楽器）がある。
Discussion comes from Latin discussio, from discutere, made of dis- "apart" and quatere "to shake or strike." Its early sense was to break something up for close examination. From that idea, it came to mean examining a question by talking about its parts; related English words include concussion and percussion.
