conference はラテン語 conferre「ともに運ぶ」が源で、con-「共に」+ ferre「運ぶ」から成る。意見を持ち寄る、つまり考えを一か所へ運ぶ感覚が「会議」になった。refer や transfer も ferre の仲間。
