symposium はラテン語経由で古代ギリシャ語 symposion に由来し、syn-「ともに」+ posis/pinein「飲む」から成ります。もとは「一緒に飲む会」だったため、酒席での対話の場から転じて、今の「討論会・研究発表会」の意味になりました。関連語は potion, potable。
