crimson は古いフランス語・イタリア語を経て、アラビア語 qirmizī「虫染料の赤」にさかのぼります。語幹 qirmiz は kermes や carmine と同根。色名がもともと染料の名だったと知ると、深紅の濃さがぐっと具体的に感じられます。
