sarcasm はギリシャ語 sarkasmos に由来し、動詞 sarkazein は「肉を引き裂く」という意味でした。言葉で相手を切りつける感じがそのまま「皮肉」になった語で、sarcastic や sarcophagus の sarc- も同じく「肉」に通じます。
Sarcasm comes from Greek sarkasmos, from a verb meaning "to tear flesh." The image was of cutting or biting the flesh, and this became a figurative way to describe sharp, hurtful speech.
