colloquial（口語の）を知っていると、colloqu- は「話すこと・ことば」周辺の形だとつながります。ただし colloquial は“くだけた言い方”、colloquium は“学術的に話し合う会”で別物。university colloquium, department colloquium のように大学のイベント名でよく見かけ、seminar と近いものの、研究発表＋質疑応答がある少しフォーマルな場を思い浮かべると定着します。symposium ほど大規模ではないことも多い、と添えると区別しやすいです。

colloquium はラテン語 colloquium「対話」が語源で、col-「共に」+ loqui「話す」に分けられます。もとは「いっしょに話すこと」なので、研究集会を指す意味も、知識を持ち寄る対話の場と考えると腑に落ちます。関連語は colloquial と soliloquy です。
