Australia is a country in the Southern Hemisphere. It is also the name of the world's smallest continent and is known for its large natural areas, unique animals, and major cities such as Sydney and Melbourne. In English, it is a proper noun and is always capitalized.

Australia comes from Latin australis, meaning "southern." It grew out of the older expression terra australis, "southern land," used in Europe for a large unknown continent in the south. When the region became known more clearly, that old geographical idea became the country name, and it is related to austral.
