Discuss comes from Latin discutere, meaning to break apart or examine by shaking. It is made from dis-, meaning apart, and quatere, meaning to shake. The original image was of shaking something to pieces so you could inspect it carefully. From this, the word came to mean examining a subject by talking it through.
