discuss はラテン語 discutere「ばらして調べる」が語源で、中世ラテン語・フランス語を経て英語に入りました。dis-「離して」+ quatere「揺さぶる」で、論点を揺さぶって分けるイメージから「話し合う」へ発展しました。関連語は discussion, quash。
Discuss comes from Latin discutere, meaning to break apart or examine by shaking. It is made from dis-, meaning apart, and quatere, meaning to shake. The original image was of shaking something to pieces so you could inspect it carefully. From this, the word came to mean examining a subject by talking it through.
