chat を知っていれば覚えやすい語。chat を軽く2回くり返した形なので、「中身のある議論」ではなく、同じようなやり取りがぽんぽん続く気軽なおしゃべりを連想すると定着しやすいです。small talk にかなり近いですが、chitchat のほうが少しくだけていて、内容の軽さが前に出ます。serious talk や discussion の反対側に置くと整理しやすく、office chitchat、idle chitchat のように“たわいない雑談”で出やすい語です。

chitchat は近世英語でできた畳語で、chat「おしゃべり」を軽く反復した形です。chat は中英語 chatteren にさかのぼる擬音的な語で、chatter や chatty も同系、意味の薄い音が続く感じそのものが『たわいない世間話』を表しています。
Chitchat is a reduplicated form built from chat. Chat is an old informal word linked to Middle English chatteren, an imitative word for light, repeated sounds, and it is related to chatter and chatty. By repeating the sound, chitchat came to suggest small, easy, unimportant talk.
