loafing は「ぶらぶらする」の loaf に -ing が付いた形です。loaf は米語 loafer「怠け者」からの逆成で、loafer はドイツ語 Landläufer「放浪者」と関係づけられます。そこから「だらだら過ごす」という意味になりました。
