人については、やるべきことを進んでせず、努力や活動を嫌う「怠惰な」という否定的な意味で使われることが多い。一方で、時間や雰囲気については「のんびりした」「ゆったりした」のように穏やかな様子を表すこともある。

中低ドイツ語の「lasich（のろい、だるい）」が起源で、16世紀に英語に入った。原義は「体が重くて動けない」状態を指す。関連語にlaze（怠ける）がある。身体的な鈍さから精神的な怠惰へと意味が広がった語。
Lazy is thought to come from Middle Low German lasich, meaning something like "slow" or "weak." It first suggested physical heaviness or lack of energy. Later the meaning widened from bodily slowness to the idea of unwillingness to work, and it is related to laze.
