古代ペルシャ語 pairidaēza（囲まれた庭園）に由来。pairi-（周囲）+ daēza（壁）で「壁で囲まれた美しい庭」が原義。ギリシャ語 paradeisos を経てラテン語・英語に伝わり、聖書で「エデンの園」の訳語に使われ「天国・楽園」の意味に。関連語: park（同じく囲いの意から）。
