Purgatory is a state or place where someone goes through suffering or waiting before reaching a better condition. In Christian belief, it refers to a stage of purification after death. More generally, it can describe any difficult situation that feels endless and in between two stages.

Purgatory comes from Medieval Latin purgatorium, meaning "a place of cleansing," from Latin purgare, "to clean" or "purify."
