gehenna はギリシア語 Geenna を経て、ヘブライ語 ge-hinnom「ヒンノムの谷」に由来する。ge は「谷」、Hinnom は地名で、忌まわしい場所だったため「地獄」の比喩へ転じた。Gehenna や Hinnom Valley も同根で、地名が宗教語になった例だ。
