pinto はスペイン語で「まだらの・斑のある」を表す語が語源で、さらにラテン語 pingere「彩る・描く」にさかのぼります。豆の模様から名づいたので、paint や picture も同根だと知ると、「絵を描いたような豆」という像がすっと立ち上がります。
