A nihilist is a person who believes that life, values, or social systems have no real meaning or worth. The word is often used in philosophy, but it can also describe someone with a very negative and rejecting attitude.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
`-ist` は「〜の人」なので、まず `nihil + ist` で「nihilism 側の人」とまとまりで覚えるとよいです。記憶の芯は「ただ暗い人」ではなく、「既存の価値観・道徳・社会制度そのものを認めない人」。`pessimist` は悲観的な人、`cynic` は冷笑的な人ですが、`nihilist` は前提ごと否定するのが違いです。`a political nihilist` や `nihilistic view` のように、思想・立場を語る場面と結びつけると定着しやすいです。
Notice the ending `-ist`, which means a person connected with an idea, like `artist` or `scientist`. So `nihilist` is a person connected with `nihilism`. To keep it separate from `pessimist`, remember that a nihilist rejects values or meaning more deeply, not just expects bad results.

nihilist はフランス語 nihiliste を経た語で、核の nihil はラテン語で『無・何もない』。nihil は ne-『〜でない』+ hilum『ごく小さなもの』とされ、nihilism や annihilate も同根。『何も認めない人』という意味が語源から透けて見える。
Nihilist came into English through French nihiliste, based on Latin nihil, meaning "nothing." Nihil is also seen in nihilism and is related in form to annihilate. The word developed the sense of a person who accepts no fixed beliefs, values, or principles.
