skeptic はギリシャ語 skeptikos「よく見て考える人」に由来し、語幹 skept- は「見る・吟味する」。ただ信じない人でなく「観察して確かめる人」が原像なので、懐疑論者は“まず検証する人”と捉えると意味が立つ。skeptical, skepticism も同根。
