millionthはmillionに順序語尾-thが付いた語で、millionはイタリア語milione、さらにラテン語mille「千」にさかのぼる。millenniumやmillipedeも同根で、核は「千を大きくした数」という発想。だからmillionは、『巨大な千のまとまり』として理解できる。
