claim は名詞で、あることが事実だという主張や、自分に権利があるとして行う請求を指す。証拠の有無にかかわらず述べる断言にも、保険金や補償を求める正式な申立てにも使われ、文脈によって意味が決まる。
A claim is a statement that something is true, although other people may need proof before they believe it. It is often used in discussions, news, law, and advertising. It can also mean a request for money, property, or a legal right.

claim は「口に出して主張する」と「自分の取り分を求める」が一本でつながる語だと覚えると残りやすい。まず動詞の claim を思い浮かべると、名詞も「主張」「請求」の両方に広がる。`claim that ...` なら事実だと言う主張、`make/file a claim` や `insurance claim` なら正式な請求。`say` より強めだが、必ずしも証明済みではない点が重要。文脈で「発言」か「申立て」かを切り替える。

claim はラテン語 clamare「叫ぶ」が古フランス語を経て入った語で、核は clam-「叫ぶ」です。exclaim や proclaim も同根。もとは大声で呼び求めることだったので、claim が「要求・主張」になる流れが腑に落ちます。
Claim came into English through Old French from Latin clamare, meaning "to shout" or "call out." At first, the idea was calling loudly for something in public.
