A counterclaim is a legal claim made by a defendant against the person who first brought a case. It is used in court when the accused side says they also have a complaint or right to compensation. The word belongs mainly to legal language.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
counter + claim で覚える。claim はまず「主張・請求」の基本語で、insurance claim などでも見る語。そこに counter- が付くと counterattack、counteroffer と同じく「相手に対抗して返す」の感覚になる。つまり counterclaim は、訴えられた側がただ否定するだけでなく、自分の請求を相手に向けて出し返すこと。法律では file a counterclaim, bring a counterclaim の形で出やすい。denial や defense より一歩進んだ「逆に請求する」語だと押さえると忘れにくい。
Split it into `counter` + `claim`. `Counter-` means responding against something, as in `counterattack` or `counteroffer`. So a `counterclaim` is not just saying "no" to a claim, but making your own claim back against the other side.

「counterclaim」は counter-「反対に・応じて」＋ claim「要求・主張」から成る語です。claim はラテン語 clamare「叫ぶ」に由来し、exclaim や proclaim も同根なので、相手の訴えに対抗してこちらも主張を返すことが「反訴」です。
Counterclaim is made from counter- "in response, against" and claim. Claim comes from Latin clamare "to call out, shout," which also gave English exclaim and proclaim. The word developed from making a spoken demand or assertion to making an opposing claim in reply.
