A schemer is a person who makes secret or clever plans, often to gain something for themselves. The word usually suggests that the person is dishonest, manipulative, or not fully trustworthy. It is more negative than planner or strategist.

schemer は scheme + -er です。scheme は中世ラテン語 schema、さらにギリシャ語 skhema「形・姿」から来て schema や schematic と同根で、もとは「頭の中で形を組む人」だから、そこから「策をめぐらす人」の意味に伸びました。
