A counterargument is an argument made in answer to another argument, usually to challenge or weaken it. It is common in discussions, essays, and debates where different sides of an issue are considered.

counterargument は counter-「反対の」+ argument「論」の合成で、両方ともラテン語系に由来します。related は argue, counterattack。『相手の議論に対抗してぶつける論』と見れば、反論の意味が語の形からそのまま分かります。
Counterargument is made from counter- meaning "against" and argument. Both parts come through Latin-based forms in English. The whole word developed naturally to mean an argument set against another argument.
