Counterclaims are claims made in reply to another claim, especially in a legal case. They allow the person being accused or sued to make their own formal complaint against the other side. This word is mainly used in law and business disputes.

counterclaim を複数にした形。まず claim は「請求・主張」、counter- は counterargument と同じく「相手に対抗して返す」の感覚で取る。つまり「相手の請求に対し、こちらも請求を返す」。法律では file counterclaims, bring counterclaims の形で出やすい。単なる反論や否認(defense)ではなく、被告側からの独立した請求だと押さえると、claim / complaint / defense との違いも整理しやすい。複数形の -s にも注意。
