ヘビ
解説 Definition
ヘビは体が細長く、鱗に覆われた足のない脊椎動物です。多くは地上や木の上で暮らし、ハブやコブラのような毒を持つ種類も含まれます。獲物を丸のみして消化し、成長に合わせて皮を脱ぎ替えます。

snake は古英語 snaca に由来し、ゲルマン系で「地を這うもの」を表した語です。接頭辞・接尾辞に分ける語ではありませんが、snaky や snakeskin も同じ語幹 snake- を使います。名そのものに、するすると進む姿が刻まれた語だと分かります。
