scamper はおそらく古フランス語 escamper「逃げる」からで、さらに俗ラテン語 *excampare「野営地・野から出る」へさかのぼります。ex-「外へ」＋ campus「野・原」という発想なので、「さっとその場を離れる」から「ちょこちょこ走る」になったと理解できます。関連語は camp, decamp です。
Scamper probably came from Old French escamper, and may go back further to Vulgar Latin *excampare, meaning "to leave the field or camp." It combines ex- "out" with campus, "field." From the idea of getting out quickly, English developed the sense of running off in a light, hurried way; camp and decamp are related words.
