upwelling は up「上へ」+ welling「湧き上がること」で、well は古英語 weallan/wellan「沸く・湧く」にさかのぼります。well や wellspring も同根で、深い所の水がぐっと上へ湧き出す像が、そのまま海の湧昇の意味を支えています。
Upwelling is made from up and welling, from the verb well meaning "to rise or spring up." Well goes back to Old English weallan or wellan, meaning "to boil" or "bubble up." The image stayed almost unchanged over time: something deep inside rises upward like water from a spring.
