chattyは chat＋-y「…っぽい」から成る語で、chat は中英語 chatteren に連なる擬音的な語源をもつ。小鳥がちょこちょこ鳴くような音感から「ぺらぺら話す」に伸びたと考えると、おしゃべりな感じが腑に落ち、chatter や chit-chat も同根。
