解説 Definition
証拠や違いを読み取って「分かる」「見分ける」という tell。説明を受けて知るのではなく、声の調子、表情、態度、見た目の差などから判断する使い方で、can tell, hard to tell, tell A from B によく現れる。
To tell can mean to know, notice, or recognize something clearly. It is often used when you judge from signs or when you distinguish one thing or person from another. Common patterns are with whether or if, and with from.

tell は古英語 tellan「数える・順に挙げる」に由来する、古いゲルマン系の語。明快な接頭辞はないが、tale や tally が同根。もとは数を一つずつ並べる感覚で、情報や出来事を順に並べて相手に渡すことから「話す・伝える」になった。
"Tell" comes from Old English "tellan," which first meant "to count" or "list in order." It is related to "tale" and "tally," which keep the idea of putting things one by one. From counting or listing items in sequence, the word developed into the sense of giving information or telling a story.
