この tell は「伝える」ではなく、様子や手がかりから何かが分かる、違いを見分ける、真偽や状態を判断するという意味で使われます。明確な説明がなくても、外見や振る舞い、状況から推測して理解するという含みがあります。
To tell can mean to know, notice, or recognize something clearly. It is often used when you judge from signs or when you distinguish one thing or person from another. Common patterns are with whether or if, and with from.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず「tell＝伝える」だけで固定しない。この語は会話で You can tell by his face. や It’s hard to tell. の形になり、「顔つき・声・様子などの手がかりから分かる／見分ける」で頻出。see が単に見える、know が知識として知っている、tell は“違いを読み取って判断する”に近い。特に tell A from B は定番で「AとBを見分ける」。can’t tell whether ... なら「〜かどうか判断できない」。別義の「伝える tell」と分けて覚えると混乱しにくい。
Link this "tell" with clues: voice, face, tone, or behavior. Useful patterns are "tell by," "tell A from B," and "can’t tell whether..." That makes it easy to separate from "know": "know" is stored knowledge, but "tell" is noticing a difference from what you observe.

古い英語の tellan に由来し、「数える」「話す」「述べる」という意味で使われていました。そこから、言葉で相手に内容を知らせる意味が発達しました。
