untold は接頭辞 un-「〜ない」と、古英語 tellan 由来の told「語られた」を合わせた語です。もとは「語られていない」ですが、「語り尽くせない」「数え尽くせない」ほど大きいものにも使われるようになりました。tell, teller が同根で、否定がつくと未公表だけでなく莫大さの感じも出ます。
Untold combines the prefix un- meaning "not" with told, from tell, which comes from Old English tellan. It originally meant "not told" or "not spoken about." Later, it also developed the sense of "too many to be counted or described," as in untold numbers.
