古英語 tellan（数える、語る）から。ゲルマン祖語 *taljaną に遡り、原義は「順序立てて数え上げる」こと。数える→列挙する→物語るへと意味が広がった。同根語に tell、tale（物語）、teller（語り手・銀行窓口係）がある。
