解説 Definition

said は say(言う)の過去形・過去分詞です。だれかが何かを言ったことを表すときに使います。

The past tense and past participle of say, used when reporting that someone spoke, expressed an idea, or gave information at an earlier time. It may introduce the exact words spoken or summarize their content.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

原形 say「言う」の過去形・過去分詞が said。規則的な sayed ではなく、つづりも母音も変わり、発音は /sed/ です。say–said–said を一組で覚え、He said hello. のように「誰が何を言ったか」を過去の場面に置いて定着させましょう。

Connect said directly to the irregular verb pattern say–said–said. It is not spelled sayed, and its pronunciation changes clearly from /seɪ/ to /sed/. Picture a finished conversation and use the frame “Someone said something,” as in “She said yes.” This separates past said from present say. Also notice that said can introduce either exact words or reported content: “He said, ‘Hello’” and “He said that he was tired.”

例文

He said hello.

彼はこんにちはと言いました。

She said yes.

彼女ははいと言いました。

My teacher said the answer.

先生が答えを言いました。

said の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古英語 secgan「言う・語る」の過去形 sægde に由来。ゲルマン祖語 *sagjaną から派生し、ドイツ語 sagen(言う)と同根。ラテン語の「言う」系とは別系統の純粋なゲルマン語彙。関連語: say, saga(物語)。

Said is the inherited past tense and past participle of say. It developed from Old English sægde, the past form of secgan, meaning “to say, tell, or speak.” The verb belongs to a Germanic family that also includes German sagen. Historical sound and spelling changes produced the modern irregular pair say–said, while the past and participle forms became identical.
