kind は古英語 gecynde/cynde に由来し、語根は kin と同じく「生まれ・血筋・性質」を表しました。そこから「生まれつきの性質」という感覚を経て、人の性質が温かく思いやり深いことを表す形容詞になりました。kindred や kin を見ると、血縁・性質の感覚から育った語だとわかります。
Kind comes from Old English gecynde or cynde, from the same root as kin. That root was connected with birth, family, and natural character. From the idea of things "of the same nature or family," the word developed into its modern sense, and kindred still shows the older family link.
