music はギリシャ語 mousike を経て、Μοῦσα（ムーサ、芸術の女神）にさかのぼる。muse や museum も同じ語源をもつ仲間。もともと「ミューズに属する技芸」だったので、単なる音ではなく、人を霊感で動かす芸術という響きがこの語に残っている。
Music came into English through Latin and Old French from Greek mousike, meaning "the art of the Muses." The Muses were goddesses of the arts and inspiration in Greek culture.
