解説 Definition
「音楽」とは、声や楽器を使って作り出される、リズム・メロディー・ハーモニーを組み合わせた芸術形式を指す名詞です。人間の感情を表現したり、娯楽・儀式・コミュニケーションの手段として世界中の文化に根付いています。ポップス・クラシック・ジャズなど様々なジャンルがあり、人々の日常生活にも深く関わっています。
Music is the art of arranging sounds in a way that is pleasant, expressive, or meaningful. It includes songs, instrumental pieces, and many styles such as pop, classical, and jazz.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
music はまず musical（音楽の、ミュージカルの）や musician（音楽家）の土台になる核の語として覚えると広がります。日常でも listen to music, play music, background music の形で非常によく出るので、単語単体より「何をするか」と一緒に定着させるのが有効です。なお a music とはあまり言わず、普通は不可算名詞として使う点もセットで覚えると安定します。song は「1曲」、music はもっと広く「音楽というもの」全体です。
Think of `music` as the base word behind `musical` and `musician`. It is easiest to remember in common phrases like `listen to music`, `play music`, and `background music`. Also note that we usually do not say `a music`, because it is normally uncountable. `Song` is one piece, but `music` is the wider idea.

music の語源・成り立ち Etymology
music はギリシャ語 mousike を経て、Μοῦσα（ムーサ、芸術の女神）にさかのぼる。muse や museum も同じ語源をもつ仲間。もともと「ミューズに属する技芸」だったので、単なる音ではなく、人を霊感で動かす芸術という響きがこの語に残っている。
Music came into English through Latin and Old French from Greek mousike, meaning "the art of the Muses." The Muses were goddesses of the arts and inspiration in Greek culture. So the word first referred to artistic skill connected with inspiration, and later became the name for the art of organized sound. Related words include muse and museum.
