古英語 behindan に由来し、be-「そばに・周囲に」+ hindan「後ろで」から成る。hind の系列は hinder「後ろへ押しやる、妨げる」や hindmost「最後尾の」と同根で、視界の背面に置かれる感覚が「後ろに」という意味になった。
