銀行や郵便局などの窓口で、顧客の預金や引き出し、振り込みなどの手続きを担当する人。細かな金銭を扱うため正確さが求められ、丁寧な応対で信頼を築くことが大切だ。状況によっては口座開設や各種サービスの案内なども行う。
A teller is a bank employee who helps customers with basic money transactions such as deposits, withdrawals, and payments. The word is mainly used in banking. In older or broader use, it can also mean a person who tells something, such as a story.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
tell は普通「話す」だが、teller はその意味で考えるとズレる。まずは bank teller をひとかたまりで覚えるのが近道。ATM は automated teller machine なので、「窓口係 teller が機械になったもの」と結びつけると残りやすい。語尾 -er は「その役割をする人」。cashier は店のレジ係にも使えるが、teller は銀行・郵便局など金融系の窓口担当と場面で固定すると混同しにくい。

teller は tell の古い意味「数える」に由来し、古英語 tellan「勘定する」+ -er（人）でできています。tell や tale と同じ語根をもち、もとは「話す人」より「数を数える人」の色が強かったので、銀行の出納係を teller と呼ぶ理由が見えてきます。
Teller comes from tell in its older sense "to count," from Old English tellan, with the agent suffix -er. It is related to tale, since both words grew from the idea of counting or recounting. That older sense explains why a bank teller is someone who handles and counts money.
