unknownはun-「〜でない」＋known「知られた」の形で、中英語以来「知られていない」を表します。knowは古英語cnawan、さらに印欧祖語gno-「知る」にさかのぼり、「まだ知識に入っていない」感覚から不明の意味になります。関連語はknowledge, acknowledge。
Unknown is built from un-, meaning "not," and known, the past participle of know. Know comes from Old English cnawan and goes back to an ancient Indo-European root meaning "to know," also seen in knowledge and acknowledge. So unknown originally meant simply "not known," and then came to mean unfamiliar or unidentified.
