unknownはun-「〜でない」＋known「知られた」の形で、中英語以来「知られていない」を表します。knowは古英語cnawan、さらに印欧祖語gno-「知る」にさかのぼり、「まだ知識に入っていない」感覚から不明の意味になります。関連語はknowledge, acknowledge。
