古英語 wel（良く）+ cnawen（知る）の過去分詞 known の複合語。know はゲルマン祖語 *knēaną に遡り、ラテン語 cognoscere（知る）と同根。関連語：acknowledge, knowledge。「よく知られた」がそのまま「有名な」の意味になった素直な複合形容詞。
