harm は古英語 hearm「害、苦痛、悲しみ」に由来し、さらにゲルマン祖語 *harmaz にさかのぼります。単なる物理的損傷でなく「苦しませる」気配が元にあるので、「害を与える」が自然に広がりました。harmful と harmless は同じ語幹です。
