人間の知識や理解では到底知ることができない、理解不可能な性質を持つもの。哲学的には、人間の認知能力では完全に理解することができない概念や事柄を指す。
Unknowable means impossible to know or understand completely. It is often used for things about the future, deep mysteries, or questions that humans may never be able to answer.

まず know「知る」が見えれば土台ができます。そこに -able「〜できる」が付くと knowable で「知ることができる」。さらに un- が付いて unknowable なので、「今は知られていない」unknown ではなく、「そもそも人間には知りきれない」という一段強い語です。哲学・宗教・宇宙の本質のように、答えが未発見というより認識の限界を示す場面で出やすい、と覚えると定着します。

unknowable は un-「否定」+ know + -able「〜できる」から成ります。know は古英語 cnawan「知る」に由来し、knowledge と同根なので、「知りうる」の否定がそのまま「不可知」を作っている語です。
Unknowable is made from un- "not," know, and -able "able to be." Know comes from Old English cnawan, meaning "to know" or "recognize," the same root behind knowledge. The word developed in a very direct way: something that cannot be known.
