small は古英語 smæl「細い・狭い」にさかのぼり、分ける接辞はなく語幹全体で意味を担います。ドイツ語 schmal も同根で、もとは「小さい」より「幅が細い」が中心だったので、小ささが「細さ」から発想されたとわかります。
Small goes back to Old English smael, which originally meant "narrow" or "thin." It is related to German schmal, which still has the sense of "narrow." The meaning later widened from "thin in width" to the more general idea of being little in size.
