whetherは古英語hwæther「二つのうちどちら」に由来し、wh-系の疑問語根と、比較・選択を示す-therから成ります。だから意味の芯は単なる「かどうか」ではなく「二択を見比べること」です。eitherやneitherも同じ骨組みです。
Whether comes from Old English hwæther, meaning "which of two." It is built from the same wh- question pattern seen in words like what and who, together with an element showing choice between two things. That is why its oldest sense was about comparing alternatives, not just stating uncertainty. Either and neither are built with the same old pattern.
