left「左」は古英語 lyft に由来し、もとは「弱い、頼りない」を含む語感をもっていました。右手が標準とされた文化では「左」が特別視されたため、この連想が方向語として定着したのです。right や gauche を比べると語感の差が見えます。
Left in the direction sense comes from Old English lyft. It seems to have carried an earlier feeling of weakness or clumsiness, probably because many cultures treated the right hand as the normal or stronger side.
