least の語源・成り立ち Etymology
leastは古英語lǣstに由来し、比較級lessの語幹に最上級語尾-estがついた「いちばん少ない」という形である。lesserも同根で、単なる量の小ささを比べ切った語なので、at leastが「少なくともそこまでは」の感覚になる。
Least comes from Old English lǣst, the superlative form related to less. It is built from the same base idea as less, with an ending meaning "most" in that scale, so it meant "smallest in amount." This is why at least keeps the sense of "if nothing more, then this minimum amount."
