son は古英語 sunu に由来し、さらに印欧祖語 *suHnu-「息子」へさかのぼります。細かな分解はしにくい語ですが、ドイツ語 Sohn やサンスクリット語 sūnú も同根で、家族の中心語が何千年もほぼ同じ形で受け継がれてきたとわかる語です。
