「father」は古英語 faeder に由来し、さらにゲルマン祖語を経て印欧祖語 *pater にさかのぼる、家族語の非常に古い核語である。形の分解はしにくいが、paternal や patriarch には同じ pater 系の「父」の感覚が残っている。
